The Rage 7s came out in a full-court press Sunday morning against The Crushers at the Syracuse Select March Madness AAU Tournament, and Rage led 9-0 before The Crushers were able to get a shot off on offense.
Early steals by Wyatt Whitmore, Roberto Jensen, Luke Day and Nate Gaster put The Crushers on their heels. Trevor Borchardt scored first on a feed from Jensen, and Whitmore scored off a steal to make it 4-0. Nate Gaster scored the next 5 Rage points off two steals and an inside feed from Whitmore. Jensen's 3-pointer made it 12-0.
Rage then sent in its second wave, and behind Jake Thompson's double-double and game-high 12 points/11 rebounds, Rage built a 17-3 lead and enjoyed a 29-7 cushion by intermission. Rage had 8 steals and 8 assists, as well as 24 rebounds in the first half.
Gaster also scored in double figures for Rage, with 11 points. Borchardt scored 7 points with 6 rebounds, and Whitmore had 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Caleb Nichols also contributed 5 rebounds in the win.

On Saturday, Rage faced the Cortland YMCA Ballers in the weekend's first game. Rage got off to a listless start, digging an early 15-2 hole before shoring up some defensive deficiencies.
Rage trailed 22-14 at the half, and 33-23 midway through the second half before making a run. Jake Thompson scored twice to get the score to 33-27. Then Wyatt Whitmore hit one of two free throws (35-28) after a technical foul was called on Cortland for throwing elbows, something we've seen from that team on several occasions.
Rage played with grit and a high level of character throughout, though, and saw Whitmore get the score to within 35-32 with two field goals. Rage needed to begin fouling with time elapsing, and although Cortland went to the line six times (taking 10 shots there) in the final two minutes, it was still 38-34 with 30 seconds to go. But Rage couldn't pull out the last-minute win, and lost to Cortland 40-34.
Noteable: Rage went 10-for-20 from the foul line against Cortland.

Rage 7s Get Tough Draw, Battle With Solid Teams From Rochester, Syracuse Area
In its first AAU tournament of the spring, the Southern Tier Rage 7s met some stiff competition in the Cortland Shootout.
In Game 1, Rage fell behind early (13-7) but fought back and was tied at halftime (22-22) against RAP Rye of Rochester. Rage led 27-24 early in the second half, but RAP Rye eventually pulled away for a 51-38 win.
In Game 2, Rage faced a very efficient, sharp-shooting Eastside team from Rochester, which ran out to an 11-0 lead. It was 18-2 before Rage went on a mini-run (9-8) to end the first half with Eastside leading 26-11. Eastside maintained a steady advantage throughout the second half, combining tough inside play with some great outside shooting to win it 51-27.
Game 3 put Rage against the eventual tournament champion, the Coker's Phenoms, out of the Syracuse area. Rage worked to slow the speed demons early and trailed just 5-3 six minutes into the game, but the Phenoms' overall game was too much as they were able build a commanding lead (47-19) by halftime. Rage held its own in the second half, as Coker's outscored Rage just 17-15 after halftime for a 64-34 win.
An interesting read about the Coker's Phenoms: A program recently caught cheating on age/grade eligibility.

Rage AAU 7 Gets Scrimmage Win
YOUTUBE: Michael Jordan's Fundamentals of Free Throws

The Legend of Gabe Whiteman

.
Gabe Whiteman, a 4th-grader who plays for the Binghamton 6th-grade basketball team, last weekend, smack dab in the middle of the season-ending YMCA Winter Blast Tournament, crushed a finger on his left hand while building a fort at home. A slab of wood slammed down on his hand, ripping the fingernail nearly clean off.
.
The incident happened an hour before Gabe was to play in a CYO game. So Gabe and his dad, Binghamton-6 assistant coach Tim Whiteman, bandaged the finger and headed off to play. Gabe dropped 20 points in just a little more than half a game, his CYO squad winning the contest, 36-19. Gabe also limited the opponent's leading scorer to 2 points before a game official required his CYO coaches to remove him from the game because the finger was bleeding through the bandages.
.
Later that same day, Gabe was forced to miss Binghamton-6's two tourney games because he was stuck in the ER getting X-rays. Turns out the finger wasn't just nasty to look at. It was broken, too.
.
But the next morning, his Binghamton-6 team facing a rematch with Seton-6, Gabe wrapped the hand again and went to work. He scored 5 points, grabbed 2 rebounds and had a steal while being assigned to guard SCC's top scorer. Binghamton won, 61-59.
.
The Legend of Gabe Whiteman grows, as this weekend his team won its division in the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition. Gabe and his OM teammates will now compete at the state level.
.
So why does a 4th-grader wear his hair like that? Here's your answer. (Yes. Really.)

Binghamton-based 7s Win Sayre Tourney Bracket
A team of Binghamton-based 7th-graders competed in a one-day tournament Saturday, February 12, in Sayre, Pa., and the team won both its games, topping Sayre and Horseheads.
The team led 23-2 after the first quarter against Sayre, then cruised to a 62-22 victory. But the second game was much tighter, with Binghamton taking a dramatic last-second win, 54-53.
In that game, Binghamton trailed by 9 points in the first couple minutes of the first quarter, but outscored Horseheads 20-10 the rest of the way. Latrel McFarlane scored 6 of his 12 points in the final 1:30 to propel Binghamton to the win.
His field goal at the 1:30 mark got Binghamton to within 51-49. Thirty-five seconds later, McFarlane was fouled and converted both free throws to tie the game with 55 seconds to go. Wyatt Whitmore hit the second of two free throws with 21 second left (Binghamton led 52-51), but Horseheads scored in the paint to take a 53-52 lead with 10 seconds left.
Binghamton’s Nate Gaster drove the lane with 4 seconds left, but his shot was off to the left. It hit the backboard and caromed to McFarlane, who was in position on the lower left-side block. McFarlane grabbed the offensive rebound and his put-back went through the net as the horn sounded with Binghamton the 54-53 winner.
