Rage Red goes 1-3 at Scranton tournament

The Rage Red AAU basketball team went to Scranton for Easter weekend, playing four games over Friday and Saturday (April 2-3). The team went 1-3 overall.

Rage won its first game and had a chance to win its third, but lost that contest by 3 points in a tight one. In one of the team’s other losses, Rage led in the first half but committed far too many turnovers against the best/quickest full-court press the team has faced thus far. In another game, Rage was simply beaten by a much stronger team.

Friday, April 2
Game 1
Rage 42, Pocono Heat 36
(Halftime: Rage led 23-15)

Rage won this game on the strength of rebounding, as Wyatt Whitmore led a monster team performance with an outstanding outing of his own, collecting 25 boards. Kyeem Holmes had 17 rebounds and Trevor Borchardt had 13. Whitmore and Holmes had a team-high 10 points each. Brady Harrington and Deondre Bosket each scored 8 points.

Pocono tied the game with a little more than two minutes left (34-34), but Kyeem Holmes made a steal at half-court and scored (36-34). Pocono tied it again at 36-apiece, but Holmes was fouled and made both free throws (38-36) with 1:13 to play. With 30 seconds left, Deondre Bosket hit a 3-pointer (41-36), and Bosket added a free throw (42-36) a few seconds later to close out the victory.

Backcourt’s pressure put Rage in a quick 7-0 hole, but despite the deficit, Rage fought back and got to within 9-8 on two Alec Grassi baskets. A Wyatt Whitmore inside bucket tied the game at 11-11 and a Deondre Bosket 3-pointer gave Rage a 14-12 lead. Bosket scored another 3-pointer, an inside basket and a Roberto Jensen mid-range jumper saw Rage with a 21-14 first-half lead. But then came more pressure from Backcourt Hoops, which was able to regain the lead, holding a 5-point edge at the half.

This game was quickly out of hand in the second half, though, as Rage didn’t put up much resistance, watching Backcourt Hoops reel off 23 straight points to lead 56-26.
