Welcome to our Newest Player

Welcome Diggston Davis, our newest Travel Basketball player. Diggston is the younger brother of Kaziah Ross ... and he was born on November 13 at a whopping 8 pounds, 10 ounces (and 20.5 inches).

Word has it that between feedings and naps, Mommy Marchae has Diggston working on some (simple) ball-handling drills.

Looking forward to seeing him at games this season.

Weekend Activity

In a busy weekend, here are a few notes from travel ball:

Binghamton Red travelled over to Norwich and came home with a 40-30 win over their sixth
-grade team. Kobe Bogart led the Red squad with 22 points, while Vito Ferranti scored 13 for the team’s first league win.

Players from Binghamton White and Blue combined for a Saturday afternoon scrimmage at Carlisle with a newly formed older travel team. The older players got the better of it from a scoring standpoint, but it was a good workout for all the kids involved.

* Alex Creigh: 4 points, 2 rebounds
* Caroline Turner: 2 points, 6 rebounds
* Colette Chernak: 2 rebounds

A Travel Team played against the Cortland Basketball Club at St. Mary’s in Cortland Sunday afternoon, and after six periods of scrimmage play, brought home a 95-65 edge in scoring. Here are stats from Cortland:
* Roberto Jensen: 30 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists (four 3s) (4-6 FT)
* Jordan McGahy: 29 points, 26 rebounds, 8 blocks, 4 steals, 2 assists (5-13 FT)

Season Records for Binghamton Travel

The Binghamton Travel Basketball season came to a close Saturday (March 3) with three teams playing in tournaments in Cortland and Homer. Those three teams went a combined 8-2 that day, with two teams playing in the tourney championships.

Our 4th-graders cruised to victory in Homer, while our 5/6s lost in their championship 27-26 to Jamesville-DeWitte. The 6th-graders lost just one game, that one to last year's national champion AAU squad from Ithaca.

Of all the game that were reported and recorded throughout our season - which began in late October, with game starting in November - here is how our teams finished up.

Binghamton White (6)
22-4

Notable: White went 3-3 against Seton Catholic teams, with Seton being the only area team to beat White all season. White beat two different Ithaca teams this season, but the team's only other loss came in the Cortland tournament to a combined AAU team from the Ithaca area, a team that was anational champion at the 5th-grade level a year ago.

Binghamton Blue/Black (5/6)
25-8
Notable:
The Blue and Black teams scrimmaged each other three different times this season - those games are not included in the overall record. Also, one of the Blue/Black team's losses was to our White squad in an inter-program contest this winter.

Binghamton Red (4)
15-1
Notable:
The lone loss that was recorded this season for the Red team was by one point, to a Seton Catholic 5th-grade team. Binghamton Red just won the Homer-4 tournament Saturday, with an average margin of victory against other 4th-graders of 58 points.

Combined Record of Binghamton Travel Teams, 2011-2012
62-13
(.827 winning percentage)

Teams Go 5-2 in Cortland Tournament Saturday

We sent two teams to play in the Cortland Basketball Club Tournament Saturday, and the kids came home with an overall 5-2 record. The 6th-grade team went 2-1 with wins over Homer (31-26) and Owego (78-48). The one loss (61-41) came against a regional AAU champion team from Ithaca. Binghamton fell behind by about 20 points early, then played Ithaca even the rest of the way.

The 5/6s played in a second division of the Cortland tourney, and won their pool with a 3-0 record. In the championship game, Binghamton had several chances to take the win, but fell just short, losing 27-26 to a polished Jamesville-DeWitte team. Binghamton shot 2-for-14 from the foul line in the final.

One of the highlights of the day came in the 5/6 team's third game. Facing elimination and trailing 24-23, Vito Ferranti was fouled with 7 seconds remaining. Ferranti fought off illness through the day's first three games, then stepped to the free throw line and canned both shots to lead 25-24. The X-Gen (Horseheads) team struggled to get the ball to midcourt against Binghamton's press, and with a second remaining, could only get off a halfcourt shot, which was long. Ferranti was only able to play a minute or two in the final due to the stomach illness worsening.

Here are the stats we have from Cortland.

Binghamton-6 Wins League Tourney; 5s Finish 2nd

The Binghamton (White) 6th-grade team started quickly and got a nice win in the Sunday Slim Sylvester League championship Sunday at Highland Park, topping Ithaca 41-21. It was a true team effort, in the most literal sense, as no player from Binghamton scored in double-figures, and five players scored 6 points or more.

For Binghamton-6, Tyshawn High and Jalil Butts were named to the all-tournament team, while Jordan McGahy received the team's 6th-Man Award.

Binghamton-5 won its second-place game earlier on Sunday at Highland, beating St. Joseph's 57-32. This game was tied 23-23 at halftime before Binghamton ran away with it in the second half. Binghamton collected 15 steals after halftime alone off its stingy man-to-man full-court press.

Vito Ferranti was named the team's all-tournament selection, and Devon Herman was selected as this team's 6-Man Award recipient. In this game, Herman had 10 steals, 2 points and 2 rebounds.

It's worth noting that Binghamton 5's only tournament loss was to a Chenango Forks team comprised of several 6th-graders and the rest 5th-graders.

The Binghamton 5/6 team lost its final tourney game Saturday night, 39-22, to Chenango Valley. From the 5/6s, Lucas Davy was selected to the all-tournament team. Chris Surdey was that team's recipient of the 6th-Man Award.
