7/8 Team Gets 2 Comeback Wins Saturday

Saturday night at St. Ambrose, our 7/8 squad faced an Endicott squad with great size and quickness. So much size, in fact, that perhaps four of their players were larger than our biggest. Helped by that size advantage and spot-on passing, Endicott ran out to a quick 11-0 first-quarter lead.

Binghamton trailed 15-4 after the first quarter. But they regrouped heading into the second quarter and slowly began to chip away. With Endicott's most athletic player in foul trouble (four by midway through the second), Binghamton's Nicky Snyder soon joined him with four fouls of his own. Endicott converted two free throws to lead 17-4 early in the second. Then Binghamton began its long uphill climb.

Sarbast Doski (who scored a triple-double for Binghamton) hit a field goal (17-6), followed by Roberto Jensen knocking down two free throws (17-8). Endicott scored (19-8) before Isiah Turner hit from inside (19-10).

Doski scored (19-12), and Endicott answered (21-12). Then Wyatt Whitmore converted an offensive rebound into points (21-14). Doski made a free throw, then hit again from the field down the stretch toward halftime (21-17). Jensen scored on a fast-break pass from Doski (21-19) just before halftime, and Binghamton appeared to have momentum.

Binghamton's comeback, to that point, was a testament to the fantastic defensive work by Doski, Turner, Whitmore and Kyeem Holmes, who was scoreless in the first half, but who took the role of stopper against Endicott's quick guards. Holmes blocked three shots in the first half alone.

Endicott regrouped at the break and came out firing, quickly building its lead back to 27-20. But Binghamton settled down. Holmes hit two free throws (27-22), Endicott answered inside (29-22) and then Jensen canned a 3-pointer (29-25). Endicott answered again to make it 31-25.

Toward the end of the third quarter, Doski hit one-of-two free throws (31-26), then Endicott did the same (32-26) before Holmes hit his first field goal of the game - a huge 3-pointer from the top of the arc (32-29). Jensen then hit on a deep 2-pointer from the right side (32-31) to close out the third quarter.

Binghamton finally got the lead for the first time when Doski drilled a 3-pointer from the upper left-hand side of the arc. His fist-pump reaction saw Binghamton with a 34-32 advantage with 6:38 to play.

Then Turner hit a nice hot streak. First, he nailed a 17-foot jumper from the right side (36-32). But Endicott answered twice inside, pounding the ball down low to their NFL right-tackle-sized forward, tying it up at 36-apiece. Turner wouldn't be outdone. He nailed another soft jumper from 15 feet (38-36), giving Binghamton the lead for good, followed by a short jumper from Holmes (40-36). Turner then made one-of-two free throws (41-36).

Endicott scored again (41-38) but Binghamton's outsized inside crew scrapped down the stretch, as Doski, Turner, Whitmore and Holmes were re-joined by a well rested Snyder (five rebounds in the final five minutes). Binghamton did a nice job of limiting Endicott to single shots down the stretch, and Doski took the point to close out the game, draining time off the clock after each Binghamton rebound, walking the ball up court.

Endicott was forced to foul with under 30 seconds remaining, as Binghamton took good care of the basketball. Doski made three-of-four free throws, the final two with 12.7 seconds to go to close out the game, 44-38.

Earlier on Saturday ...

A group of 7/8s traveled north to play the Cortland Basketball Club (not to be confused with The Ballers of Cortland). Binghamton was in an early hole, trailing after one period of play, 15-6, but over the next 16 minutes of play, whittled away until taking a a 34-32 lead on a Trevor Borchardt inside basket. The Binghamton-based group made a few runs, but eventually trailed by 9 points at various stages of the first half (the teams played six periods).

Caleb Link's bucket got Binghamton to within 30-23. Sarbast Doski scored inside (32-25), then stole the inbounds pass, scored again and was fouled. He made the free throw to get Binghamton within 32-28. Roberto Jensen then hit on a nice drive-pullup jumper from the left (30-28), which was followed by two Kyeem Holmes free throws to tie things up at 32-apiece. Borchardt's inside score followed (34-32).

Binghamton threatened to pull away a few times in the second segment of the game, but sharp outside shooting kept Cortland in it. Doski and Jensen combined for four free throws (39-34), but a quick Cortland bucket (39-36), followed by a trey from the top of the arc (39-39) made it interesting. Isiah Turner scored from the right baseline for Binghamton (41-39), then scored again in the paint (43-39) before Brady Harrington popped a nice 3-pointer from the top (46-39) to afford Binghamton some breathing room.

Borchard scored 7 points in the fifth period of play, and a Harrington drive to the basket helped Binghamton to a 63-57 lead with four minutes remaining. In that span, Doski scored with about three minutes to go, and Turner closed it out with an inside basket for the win.
