Binghamton 4/5 tops Whitney Point-5

Binghamton 4/5 played Whitney Point-5 Thursday night at Roosevelt and came away with a 44-29 victory.

Binghamton got out to a 15-11 first-quarter lead, as Nate Gaster and Anthony Ferranti scored inside and Garrett Alapeck converted on three drives for field goals.

In the second quarter, Binghamton played tight defense. Whitney Point scored first to cut the lead to 15-13, but Binghamton went on a 7-2 run the remainer of the first half. Point scored first to open the third quarter as well, but the Binghamton defense stepped up again, helping a 10-2 run. Binghamton led 32-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

While Jonah Chambers' 3 rebounds won't stand out in the stats category, he set the tone for Binghamton's swarming defense, playing much of the time on the floor, scrambling for loose basketballs and playing a hard-nosed brand of ball.

Shooting woes hurt 4/5 squad against CV 5/6

The Binghamton 4/5 team played Chenango Valley 5/6 Tuesday night at Roosevelt in a rematch of a game played in December, a game CV won easily, 47-21. This time, with the size help of Nathan Gaster, Nathan Oliva and Nick Snyder (with permission from the CV coaches) and a steady rotation of 13 players, Binghamton trailed CV early in the third quarter just 28-22 before Valley pulled away for a 50-31 win.

CV started fast, building a 16-6 lead after the first, but Binghamton battled back in the second on inside baskets by Suehaidee Masso, Austin Becker-Harris, Nate Oliva, and two rebound/putbacks by Patrick Goodman to end the second quarter trailing 26-18.

Binghamton collected 55 rebounds in the contest, many off the offensive glass, but inside shooting trouble hurt the Binghamton squad, as they could not convert on many of those rebound opportunities. Binghamton 4/5 also went 1-for-12 at the free throw line (CV was 2-for-8).

"The 4/5 squad is playing at a much higher level of intensity its last few times out, and the team's overall aggressive play is evident," said Stephen Jensen, who is bench-coaching the 4/5 team the rest of this season. "They're playing up, in most cases, and against much larger competition, but every game, from every player, we're seeing increments of improvement, which is great. The kids are playing hard, and that's all you can ask for."

Bing 4/5 has solid 1st half against Endicott

The Binghamton 4/5 team took on a very aggressive Endicott-5 squad at Roosevelt Monday night, and through a half of basketball, beat Endicott in all facets of the game, leading at halftime, 14-11.

But a fourth-quarter Endicott full-court press proved to be too much for Binghamton, as Endicott scored 16-straight points to pull away for a 45-25 victory.

In the first quarter, Nate Gaster, Kyeem Holmes and Anthony Ferranti scored field goals and were aided by a Roberto Jensen free throw, giving Binghamton a 7-5 lead after one. In the second quarter, Gaster, Austin Becker-Harris and Casey Walsh scored from the field, and Binghamton held a 14-11 edge at intermission.

After the break, Gaster scored inside and Jensen added two more free throws to give Binghamton an 18-13 lead, but Endicott chipped away. Gaster gave Binghamton its last lead at 21-19 before Endicott scored 10-straight points to end the third quarter with a 29-21 lead.

Binghamton Blue: Two weekend games

Sarbast Doski was one steal shy of a triple double, but he was saddled with foul trouble throughout, as Binghamton 5/6 Blue traveled to Johnson City and lost on Friday night to JC-6, 48-33.

Doski had a team-high 12 points, 10 rebounds and 9 steals, while Andre Hawkins scored 11 points for Binghamton, which trailed 16-14 after the first quarter and 27-20 at the intermission, as JC made a desperation 3-point heave as the halftime buzzer sounded.

* Nathan Oliva: 3 rebounds

On Saturday morning, Binghamton Blue went over to the Endicott Boys & Girls Club to play the Endicott-6 squad, the same club that beat Binghamton over the holiday break, 51-19. This time, it was a different story.

Binghamton came to play this time. With just a few minutes left in the contest, Blue had battled back from an 11-point third-quarter deficit and trailed just 38-34 before Endicott pulled away for a 50-35 victory.

Binghamton brought defensive intensity in the first quarter, leading Endicott at one point, 10-7, a far cry from the first quarter in December, when Endicott sprinted out to a 13-2 lead after one period, and a 24-6 edge at the half. While Binghamton Blue's offense sputtered in the second quarter on Saturday, the defense was solid, and Endicott led 18-12 at the break.

In the third quarter, Endicott looked to pull away, leading at one point, 32-21. But Blue wouldn't go away this time. Led by Nicky Snyder's guts-on-the-floor aggressive defense, Binghamton clawed back. Andre Hawkins scored one bucket and Sarbast Doski added two field goals to trim the lead to 34-27 to end the third quarter.

Hawkins scored to start the fourth (34-29), and he followed a couple trips down the court later with a 3-point field goal to trim the Endicott advantage to 36-32, forcing an Endicott timeout.
Endicott scored again, but Binghamton's Nathan Oliva grabbed an inside rebound and got a quick put-back underneath to make it 38-34. But over the final 3 minutes, Endicott simply had more gas left, securing the win.

Doski fouled out in the fourth quarter, and Binghamton was without the services of Nate Gaster (flu) for the second straight contest.

Binghamton 4/5 gets second straight win

The Binghamton 4/5 squad, playing in a division with mostly teams comprised of 5th- and 6th-graders, got its second straight win Saturday afternoon, beating Maine-Endwell 5/6 Gold, 33-19, at the downtown Binghamton YMCA.

Binghamton 4/5 was joined by Nate Gaster and Nathan Oliva (both of the Binghamton 5/6 Blue squad) for this game, with permission from opposing coaches. Perhaps it was the added height, or maybe the 4/5 team just put things together Saturday. But whatever the reason, the team played very well as a group, displaying a renewed energy and aggressive style on the court.

Binghamton opened up an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and led at halftime 16-11. After the third quarter, Binghamton 4/5 led 23-13 and Austin Becker-Harris' bucket late in the fourth gave Binghamton the final lead of 33-19.

Gaster and Oliva certainly complemented the inside games of Suehaidee Masso and Patrick Goodman. But it was the aggressive drives by guards Jonah Chambers, Casey Walsh, Garrett Alapeck and Becker-Harris that may have been the biggest difference in the team's solid play in this game.

Blue led 18-12 after the first quarter and held a 28-23 edge at halftime. Binghamton built a 9-point lead in the third quarter and a 10-point lead late in the fourth before a few last-minute Oneonta full-court press steals and conversions got Oneonta to within 5, where it ended.

Binghamton 5/6 loses to M-E

The Maine-Endwell-6 team came to Roosevelt Tuesday night and topped Binghamton 5/6 Blue, 66-42 on the strength of a 39-point second half.

M-E led 14-9 after the first quarter, and extended that lead to 16-9 just into the second quarter. But Binghamton answered, with Nate Gaster first sinking two free throws, then scoring inside on a fast break to get Blue back to within 16-13. A Maine-Endwell 3-pointer extended the lead, but Sarbast Doski and Andre Hawkins scored back-to-back buckets to get Binghamton to within 19-17. One more M-E basket put the lead at 4 points before Hawkins scored two straight baskets to tie the game at 21-apiece. M-E scored 6 straight points to end the first half, leading at the break, 27-21.

M-E used its running game early and often in the third quarter, pushing its lead to 45-29. Through the end of the third and into the fourth quarter, M-E went on a 16-2 run, putting the game away.

Binghamton 4/5 gets a win

The Binghamton 4/5 squad played inspired defense Monday night at Roosevelt, holding the Maine-Endwell 5/6 Blue team scoreless until the 4:51 mark of the third quarter. Binghamton led 4-0 after the first quarter and 9-0 at halftime and weathered an M-E fourth-quarter run to win an exciting game, 27-24.

Anthony Ferranti hit two free throws late in the fourth quarter to put Binghamton's lead at 4 points, and M-E made just one more free throw the rest of the way.

Kyeem Holmes and Suehaidee Masso did very well rebounding, each pulling down several boards against M-E's two much taller sixth-graders.

Improvement at Norwich

Facing a Vipers squad that trounced us in a pre-holiday doubleheader at Oneonta by 27 points, Binghamton 5/6 played at the Norwich YMCA Saturday. We had a solid start and led at the half, but despite working to slow down this running Norwich team, they simply out-conditioned us in the third quarter and into the fourth, en route to a 39-27 win.

Binghamton started well, building a 7-4 lead after the first quarter, and built that lead to 13-4 into the second period. But with a handful of Binghamton players absent, including Alex Vega and Anar Doski (both no-shows) for the second straight game, and our overall team conditioning clearly in need of some attention, we allowed Norwich to run back into it, and we led at the half 16-14.

The key was a Norwich 15-point third quarter, while we scratched out just 3 points. Through the other three quarters, Binghamton and Norwich were dead even, 24-24.

Sarbast Doski led us with 11 points and had his second straight double-double (13 rebounds), while Nicky Snyder collected an impressive 19 boards. Doski just missed a third-straight double-double in the January 3 game at Endicott, when he went for 9 points and 11 rebounds.

Facing Whitney Point

The title of this entry is all things - energizing, frustrating and ultimately, fun. That sums up when the Binghamton 5/6 team faces Whitney Point-6.

Thursday night (January 8) we faced them at Roosevelt Elementary, minus Alex Vega (he missed the game because he was at the mall?) and Anar Doski (missing in action), and we played them tough for a third time this season. Unfortunately, we lost to them for the third time, too, this time 60-47.

That said, it was a very competitive ballgame, and as WP head coach Scott Harrington said after the contest, they always know they were in a battle when they face us.

Andre Hawkins turned in a gutty performance, leading us with 21 points, while Sarbast Doski had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

We trailed 14-8 after one, and WP hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to grab a 28-18 lead at intermission. Binghamton clawed back a bit in the third, but what this game came down to, as it has in the previous meetings, was Zach Marsh, as he led WP with 35 points. Not much more can be said about this boy, as he is tall, athletic, a very good ball-handler and he has a soft touch, to boot. I imagine most teams have a difficult time containing him.

Still, Binghamton got back to within 6 points twice in the second half - once midweay through the third quarter, and again early in the fourth quarter.

Makeup game with Endicott

On Saturday (January 3) the Binghamton 5/6 team made up a game with Endicott-6 from mid-December. After a couple weeks off, the team had a very lackluster performance against a very precise team - not a good combination. Nick Snyder, our big man inside, and Anar Doski, did not show up for this game.

No highlights from this game. We trailed 13-2 after the first quarter, 24-6 at the half, and Endicott "took it easy" on us in the second half and still outscored Binghamton 29-13. To be brutally honest, as a team we played without heart or passion.
