While Binghamton 5-6 White was outscored by Vestal over the course of several five-minute periods Thursday night at the Endicott Boys & Girl Club, there were several encouraging items to report from this scrimmage/practice situation. In no particular order:
* Our starting five outscored Vestal's starting five over the first five minutes of the game, 10-2. Fairly impressive, considering Vestal has nine roster players, all of whom are AAU-level players. Will Gladney scored 4 in that period, while Nate Gaster, Roberto Jensen and Kyeem Holmes each scored 2. The most impressive thing was holding Vestal to a single bucket.
* We had other five-minute stretches during which we outscored Vestal (3-2 and 6-4), and a few where we were very competitive (being outscored just 3-2 and 6-5).
Our team of five that outscored Vestal 3-2 over five minutes was: Matt Collins-Pringle, Devin Young, Will Gladney, Devin Weldon and Andy Garcia. The group that outscored Vestal 6-4 over five minutes was: Yosef Baker, Devin Young, Milton Jimenez, Jonah Chambers and Andy Garcia.
The group that was outscored by Vestal just 3-2 was: Devin Weldon, Will Gladney, Yosef Baker, Devin Young and Andy Garcia. The group that was outscored just 6-5 was: Nate Gaster, Latrel McFarlane, Will Gladney, Jordan Bideaux and Yosef Baker.
There were a few other periods of play, though, where the closest we could get was 9-5, 10-4 and 11-6. All-in-all, though, I think the boys had a very good scrimmage, especially considering that Vestal squad is head-and-shoulders the best team in our league this year.
* Will Gladney returned to action for our program for the first time since he was in fourth grade. It was nice to have him back, as he contributed right away, leading the team in scoring (15 points) and grabbing 10 rebounds.
* Yosef Baker also returned to game action, in very impressive fashion. Yosef grabbed 8 rebounds and was a demon inside for us. Most impressive was his one-on-one defense against Vestal's big man (#5) inside. Yosef played a fantastic game defensively, and if we were to choose a "defensive player of the game" in this situation, it was Yosef, very clearly.
* We had 10 of our 13 players score in this scrimmage, and everyone appears in the box score, making team contributions.
