Shorthanded Blue beats Vestal by 6

Binghamton 5-6 Blue, with just six players in attendance, one of whom had lost his voice, gutted out a 34-28 win over Vestal Green Saturday afternoon at the Binghamton YMCA.

Binghamton trailed 11-10 after the first quarter, and after the teams had traded leads for much of the second quarter, Blue faced a 5-point deficit early in the fourth quarter. Garrett Alapeck, who coaches said they hadn't realized was under the weather until very late in the game, scored on a baseline move and was fouled, getting Binghamton back to within 3 points. He missed the free throw, but got the offensive rebound blasting down the middle and put it back to make it a 1-point lead.

"I had no idea he was sick," said Mike Robinson, head coach for Blue. Robinson laughed, adding that perhaps he didn't know because Alapeck had all but lost his voice.

"I knew something was wrong when he asked to come out of the game for a bit in the fourth," Robinson said of Alapeck. "He never wants out of a game."

Playing with only one substitution possibility, Binghamton relied mainly on the inside-outside combination of Suehaidee Masso and Kameron Crimmins. Frequently, Masso would receive entry passes on the low block and back her defender in, where she'd turn and look to score. She made shots or was fouled several times in critical moments down the stretch, lifting Blue back on top, eventually building the advantage to a game-high, game-ending 6 points.

When Masso wasn't taking care of business in the paint, Crimmins was driving the lane, scoring or dishing to teammates. Masso and Crimmins scored 14 points apiece to lead Binghamton Blue.

No Defensive Player of the Game was named Saturday because coaches agreed, it was a very balanced defensive effort from the six in attendance: Alapeck, Masso, Crimmins, Austin Becker-Harris, Ismar Turkovic and Zion Burwell.
